I was in my forties when the Lord “called me out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9) A few years later, in 1993, I had my initial introduction to Mexico during a week-long construction trip to The Mexican-Indian Training Center, a Christian bible school. Even though I knew no Spanish or anything about Mexican culture, my notes from the first day of that trip concluded with the sentence, “I feel unaccountably and overwhelmingly at home here.”
My love for the people of Mexico combined with a desire to serve the Lord was apparent to those who knew me. Five years later, while on a return trip to the school, one of my friends asked, “Jim, seeing you love it here so much, why don’t you just live here?” I responded by saying, “If God wants me here, He’ll have to call me somehow.” What wonderful confirmation when the Lord made His will clear to me through Dan Hall, the director, who invited me to live at the school. During my sixteen months at the school I learned Spanish while joining in evangelistic outreach and church planting. I also helped with a music institute (teaching violin) in Querétaro, the city where I now reside.
After returning to the states, I spent my following summers assisting in the music institute and other mission work in Querétaro. In 2005 I traveled from Querétaro to the Mezquital area to translate for a short-term trip with To Every Tribe and my home church. A couple of weeks later, on a trip to Oaxaca with David Sitton, David cast a vision for me to join the ministry. Following a request for my home church to send me to the field, the elders confirmed my call. I had the privilege to be part of the first class trained through the Center for Pioneer Church Planting. Upon graduation, I moved to Mexico, where my current responsibilities include: church planting, music ministry, helping with To Every Tribe short-term trips, assisting several local ministries, teaching English, and taking occasional trips to local Indian groups in the sierra.
The only reason I’m in Mexico is because Jesus wants me here. He’s arranged everything. When the Lord saved me, He also brought me to a knowledge of His active sovereignty in my life. I realized that I could do nothing apart from Him. He is the living and active One in my life. It’s so good to trust Him and follow His call wherever He leads.
In January 2010, I will be joining a team with Chris Johnson (CPCP ‘07) and Chris Berger (CPCP ‘06) that will focus on bringing the life-changing gospel to the people of La Barra in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. We believe God has called us to plant a God-glorifying, bible believing, Christ-exalting church that is nationally-led, self-supporting and reproducing. I desire your prayers as we begin this new and exciting work.
Team La Barra consists of: Chris Johnson-CPCP ’07, Chris Berger-CPCP ’06, and Jim Blomstrand-CPCP ’06
